THE
WHITE LION
FOBBING
This is a 14th century building that was used as a Chandlery making sails and other parts for ships that used the wharf at the bottom of the road.
During the 17th century it became a public house where it was rumoured that Daniel
Defoe the famous author and Jack Straw the leader of the Peasants Revolt (a march from Fobbing to London in 1381 to demonstrate against the introduction of Poll Tax), used to frequent the pub.
A commemorative stone outside the pub remembers the revolt. |
