The original church was built by the Normans, comprising of a south aisle, chapel and doorway.
The church was rebuilt in the 15th century and given a north aisle and timber bell turret. In 1886 the north part of the church was rebuilt to a design by Blomfield.
The east window is by Kempe and there is a fine brass from 1631 of Samuel Harsnett, a vicar of Chigwell who became archbishop of York.
