Built by the Saxons in the early 11th century using bricks from the Roman villa that occupied the site previously. The church had chancels and naves added by the Normans in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Sussex chapel was added to house 3 alabaster figures presented by Elizabeth 1. Restorations were carried out in 1860 and 1909.
