The best known
street in York, the name comes from "shamnels" or stalls used by the butchers
for meat display. The 14th and 15th century overhanging houses
and cobbled street have been carefully restored and house many leather and craft shops.
There is a shrine to Margaret Clitherow, a butchers wife who was pressed to death
for harbouring Jesuit priests. She was canonised ST Margaret of York in 1970.
