The best known street in York, the name comes from "shamnels" or stalls used by the butchers for meat display.  The 14^th and 15^th century overhanging houses and cobbled street have been carefully restored and house many leather and craft shops.   There is a shrine to Margaret Clitherow, a butchers wife who was pressed to death for harbouring Jesuit priests.  She was canonised ST Margaret of York in 1970.
