It was built in the 12th and 13th
centuries at the behest of the Abbess of Barking. The south aisle was added in the
15th century. In December 1800 the tower collapsed, only the chancel and the small
chapel were saved from the wreckage. The church was re-built with a spire, which
disappeared around 1900.
