PALHEIROS - MADEIRA

These traditional houses were once wide spread around the island of Madeira, but now the only lovingly preserved buildings are in the town of Santana. The brightly painted A-shaped cottages with straw roofs that almost touch the ground are found near the town hall. A central door leads into small living quarters, with the upper level used for storage.
