An Irish nobleman brought Christianity to Scotland in 563, the Abbey was built by his followers.
From the 6th century, 59 kings ( 48 from Scotland, 4 from Ireland and 7 from Norway ) have been buried here. Excavation has uncovered the “Street of the Dead” where the bodies were conveyed from the shore to the 11th century St. Oran’s chapel for the funeral service.
