THE CURFEW GATE
BARKING

When Henry V111 ordered the dissolution of the monasteries, Barking Abbey was dismantled.  This work was finished in 1539, but the Curfew Gate, which had contained the Chapel of the Holy Rood, was left in tact.  It was also known as the Firebell Gate which ensured its survival near the central market.
