Building was completed in 1080 on the site of the Roman temple of Claudius. As a
Royal fortress it was intended to protect eastern England from foreign invasion and local
uprisings. It was occupied, in the reign of King John, by French soldiers.
The Castle is now a museum exhibiting treasured reminders of Colchesters rich
heritage.
