The cross wing on the south is 500 years old but the rest of the inn dates from
the 17th century. The massive oak beam across the bar is said to date from
1627. Its history is steeped in stories of smuggling and there are supposed to be
secret underground cellars in the yard where contraband was stored, with paths leading to
the Thames via the marshes.
