This was part of the fabled kingdom of Lyonesse, the land of King
Arthur. The monastery was founded by Edward the Confessor in 1044 with the help of the
monks from Mont ST Michel, off the Normandy coast of France. In the 12th century, the
island was captured by King Johns men disguised as pilgrims. This trick was repeated
in 1471 when the Earl of Oxford captured the island for Edward 1V during the War of the
Roses.
