ST JOHN'S ABBEY GATE COLCHESTER In the 11th century the Abbey of ST John was founded for Benedictine monks by Eudo Dapifer. The only part remaining is the north gatehouse which dates from the 15th century. It has a splendid facade with upper windows and battlements. The facade to the Abbey is much simpler. The building was much restored in the last century. |
