The original church was built here in the reign of King Canute. It was
greatly extended by Harold to house the Holy Rood and after his death at the battle of
Hastings he was buried here. By 1184 Waltham was one of the largest and richest
abbeys in England. Henry V111 destroyed all but the Nave and the church was not
restored until 1859.
