Clement Sysley, a wealthy
merchant, had the house built in 1550. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was
occupied by tenant farmers. By 1830 it was so dilapidated that it was to be
demolished. Edward Sage fought for its survival. In 1913 the Society for
the Protection of Ancient Buildings raised funds to restore it.
