Canvey Island was prone to
flooding until Cornelius Vermuyden, a Dutch engineer, and his team of workers were brought
to the island because of their expertise in saving Hollands coastline. They
built their own houses in the Dutch style, but only two remain. One of the
cottages has been restored as a museum.
